In either category, there are only so many ways a spell could have been cast on the bag that you are aware of...
Caster in the area: Someone would have had to be within range and line of sight of the bag to have affected it. Which means that, in this situation, someone would have had to have been within... somewhere between touch and Long range (400'+40' per caster level), not counting the possibility of metamagic feats extending that range. Regardless, the caster in this situation would be well within a quarter mile, at maximum non-metamagic range ((20th level caster x 40')+400'= 1200').
Kn (Engineering) or plain Int check DC 15 for more info...
Caster not in the area: Some divination spells, such as scry or greater scry, can allow for certain spells to be cast through the scrying sensor. This implies that Magnus, his backpack, something in the backpack, or on Magnus' person was being actively or passively scryed upon. Having to discount any unique spells that a caster may have invented on their own, even these spells have limits on what spells maybe cast through them.
Spellcraft DC 17 for further info on scrying...
Beyond that, its impossible to make an intelligent assertion about what caused the miraculous survival of Magnus' backpack without further information or evidence...
- Check DC 15 info:
The tent was up at the time... so line of sight was only possible within the tent
- Check DC 17 info:

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
It used to be that paranoia would keep his mind racing after learning he was being watched, but whoever had cast the spell in question had protected his notes, not fried them, and for that he owed his watcher thanks.
"It seems Jinx, that I may have an unseen guardian angel, and seen or hidden, I owe them a great deal." He says this clearly, hoping that whoever may in fact be scrying him, would know that he is grateful.
"What do you think Darmorel, sound like anyone familiar?"

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
"Well, it could be just coincidence, but I do recall someone who had our backs the last time we encountered undead creatures. When we fought those vampires, the priestess friend of the Abbot of Goldenfields did come to our rescue. She would certainly be a powerful enough member of her order," Darmorel pauses and looks meaningfully at Magnus, "to cast a scrying spell and protections of that strength. And she did seem to be watching us, or specifically you, that last time. I don't know where she hails from, but Goldenfields isn't all that far from here."
She rises to all fours tail twitching. "If everyone is ready, the day doesn't look like it's going to get much warmer so we might as well get moving. It shouldn't be long to Red Larch and a cozy hearth. Who knows, maybe certain old lady admirers have moved back to town, eh Magnus?" She turns to face the roadway, a chuckle rumbling in her chest.

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
Deris put on his pack as Darmorel called for everyone to get ready. Without the horses, it was going to be a long day of traveling, but he was certainly used to that. Deris thought back on the scene with Jinx and Destin. It was truly odd that the young man's bag had survived the fireball, and odder still that it might be due to the influence of some unknown watcher. He wondered who this "priestess" was, and determined himself to find out.
He walked over to where Darmorel stood, tail twitching as she waited for everyone to make themselves ready. "Lady Darmorel, do we have allies in this part of the world that you have not yet told us about? I understand that you have no requirement to tell us everything you know, and everything about your past, but perhaps this is something I need to know?"

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
Still looking off into the distance, "She along with the Abbot of Goldenfields helped to heal my animal friend, Lobo, of a unique form of lycanthropy and she was kind enough to travel with our group away from Goldenfields when we left. We parted ways soon after that, and we weren't even absolutely certain it was she that later helped us to fight off a swarm of vampire underlings. We strongly suspected it was her, but the night was dark and our helper chose not to make themselves known. I don't recall her name right off. Makes me wish that Cardin were here. He would know. Suffice to say that she was a wanderer and that I have no idea where she is now. It just struck me as coincidental since we suspected she had been scrying on us that time before. But, like I said, we never even confirmed it was her."

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
With those less than comforting thoughts working through each of the group's member's minds, they set off in the pre-dawn where the eastern sky begins to grey as Shar loses her grip on the world and is forced to yield to Lathander's light.
The morning travel is quiet, save for the sounds of nature. A thin layer of dew forms on everything the morning light touches. The chilly morning temperatures make this a bit uncomfortable for those who lack innate or magical protections to ward off the cold. Soon enough, individual trails of smoke can be seen in the distance. An hour or so later the roof tops of Red Larch come into view.
The party crosses into the town soon after the first shopkeepers have finished arranging their goods for those passers-by and towns folk looking for a quick bite before being about their morning work.
The group receives various friendly salutations from those towns folk they pass.
...Where do you go from here?
Map and well known info about Red Larch
Note: the map shown on the link shows a different road than the one you took to get to Red Larch. The road in the map is more of a trail now and is not as well travelled. As a result, Amphail was by-passed in your journey.

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
Changing back to human form, Darmorel looks around for the shop that she remembers to re-provision the group for the last leg of the journey. The warnings of the mysterious figure repeat incessantly in her head. More and more she thinks of this not as journey's end, but as the beginning of something new. She feels beholden to protect these new companions of hers from what may come and aches to return to her family and quiet the voice in the back of her head that whispers that all may not be well.

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
Deris looked around Red Larch with interest as he followed Darmorel through the town. He had never spent any time here before, and was curious as to what the locals did for a living. He noticed the farmlands as they approached the town, of course, and the soil seemed to be fairly fertile here. There also seemed to be a large number of weavers and dye-makers. He liked such earthy folk, and he normally spent a lot of time with them on his travels. For now, though, his job was as escort to the Lady Darmorel. He knew now that she was for more capable than she seemed at first glance, but he also knew that her enemies were likely just as capable. Like the vampire from the previous night. Was that truly a chance encounter, or was there something more...personal about it. Either way, while he was prepared to give the Lady Darmorel more slack in her personal freedom, he was also even more committed to his duty to keep her safe on this journey.

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
Just outside the gates of the city Xavkul dismisses his mount and walks into the city. His demeanor changing greatly from the open and carefree life of the road with people he can trust to that of a well what you would expect of a half-orc gladiator. Standing tall and shedding all acts of his magely nature and walking with the strut of a proud pit fighter.

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
While the half-orc in the party's midst does draw a few double-takes from the locals as does the Gnomes unusual pet, but no one seems terribly interested in you aside from those merchants who (relatively politely) hold up their wares and produce, hailing their excellent quality.
Unless the party wishes to stop for food, drink, and or rest, the road lays open for you to continue north to Triboar...
What do you do?

"Lady Darmorel, is there something in particular you need to do here? If not, I think we are all good to continue on our journey. Sooner started is sooner done, after all." Deris was anxious to be out of Triboar and back on the open road. They were drawing far too much attention for his peace of mind.

Re: First game- after the Vampire attack
"Certainly, Deris. Magnus and I came through this area several times when we were traveling together. I was just looking for familiar faces. If anyone needs something to eat or to replace their camping gear the merchants here were always helpful. You can resupply and then we can continue on to Triboar."
Darmorel exchanges pleasantries with a few of the merchants, checking to make sure things have been quiet since the last time she'd been through. She stops briefly at the site of Shrundelar's shop to say a short prayer for the old woman and her sister and then waits for her companions to regroup following any shopping they needed. When everyone is ready she will begin on the road again, waiting until they are a reasonable distance from the village to transform back into tiger form.
